Hong Kong Evacuees.

Commonwealth Treasury have submitted claims for reimbursement of the expenditure on Hong Kong evacuees during September, during October, during November, çertified by Maughan with supporting schedules and receipts totalling Australian, £13.343.15.7d., £13,768,3.6d, £12,906.6.2d. respectively. Claims up to and including June, have been paid in London, and the High Commissioner is said to be in touch with the Crown Agents in respect of claims submitted for July and August. Similar claims for December and January may be expected shortly.

2. Family remittances for Government officials represent £6,600 per month of the above totals and for non-Government officials 4,500 per month. Maintenance allowances averaged £1,300 per month.

3. Should be glad for instructions as to whether the amounts should be paid off here, in which case it will be necessary to remit me funds, or whether payment will be made in London by the Crown Agents. In the latter case, Commonwealth Treasury would wish to be reimbursed promptly, without delay involved in waiting for the documents reaching London. I suggest payments to be made on receipt from me of telegraphic advice of claims certified by Maughan, when(?) the necessary supporting document has been received by me.

4**

I would propose in any case to forward by mail detailed statement including nominal roll of persons who have received payment and to retain here for the present the supporting vouchers.
